Bill Gates is no longer the richest man on earth....
11 March 2010
Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helu has replaced Microsoft founder Bill Gates as the world's richest man, according to the latest Forbes World Billionaire List.
This is the third time in three years the world has a new richest man.
Mr Slim increased his fortune by $18.5bn last year and is now said to be worth $53.5bn, in comparison to Bill Gates who is worth $53bn. This left US investor Warren Buffett, valued at $43bn, to take third place.
The world now has 1,011 billionaires, according to the Forbes rich list, up from 793 a year ago but still shy of the record 1,125 in 2008.
US billionaires still dominate the ranks, but their grip seems to be slipping. Americans now account for 40% of the world’s billionaires, down from 45% a year ago.
Representing the United Kingdom in the top 100 are Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor and family in spot 45, and David and Simon Reuben in 93rd place.
